He reports that orthopedic surgeons such as Dr. Stephen O’Brien of the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan are witnessing an increase of patients in their 50s and 60s that are coming in for multiple surgeries on worn out, beat up, and badly injured tendons, ligaments and joints. Instead of delaying or avoiding major surgeries, boomers are looking to get into the operating room as soon as they can in order to get back out on the field and continue their rigorous athletic lifestyles. Winerip depicts the new retiree reality – determined athletes getting dozens of surgeries that push the limits of the human body and redefine the world of sports medicine.
