Question:
I recently pulled my hamstring I rested it for two weeks and now one week after resting I’ve strained the same muscle. How long should I rest it and how much will icing speed up recovery?
Answer:
Research has shown that hamstring strains can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to heal depending on the degree of the injury. Some injuries may take longer if there is a complete tear of the muscle. If you return to your sport before the muscle has healed you risk reinjuring the muscle.
Ice reduces the inflammatory process that takes place when a muscle is injured and will speed up the recovery process. However, it will not eliminate the need for rest. Also, physical rehabilitation after a muscle injury may be necessary to assist in returning to the sports activity. You might consider working wth a physical therapist.
