MOJI OVERVIEW:
Dylan Tweney of Wired Science takes a look into the technology behind and purported benefits of barefoot running. The article discusses research by Daniel Lieberman, a professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University, which points to traditional highly-cushioned running shoes as a cause for common running injuries including plantar fasciitis, runners’ knee, and shin splints. Through Lieberman’s explanations and video, Tweney shows the difference in heel strike between runners who use traditional running shoes and those who run barefoot. Though he cites evidence that running barefoot may be more natural from a biomechanical perspective, Tweney concludes that there is not enough evidence to prove that running barefoot is demonstrably better for you than running in traditional shoes. However, what he does offer is solid advice as to how to begin barefoot running for those who would like to test the sport for themselves.
