Question:

I am an avid soccer player, what can be done to prevent patellar tendonitis?

Answer:

  • Warm Up properly: A good warm up is essential in getting the body ready for any activity.
  • Stretch and strengthen. It is important that muscles around the knee be in top condition. Work on the strength and flexibility of all the muscles groups in the hips and legs.
  • Rest and Recovery: Rest is very important in helping soft tissues of the body recover from strenuous activity. Allow adequate recovery time between workouts and training sessions.
  • Footwear. A good pair of shoes will help provide cushioning, stability, and support your knees and lower leg during the running or walking motion.
  • Avoid activities that cause pain.
  • Compression/strapping. Compression can provide an added level of support and stability to weak or injured knees. Patellar tendon straps (infrapatellar strap) can sometimes be helpful.
